The Unbiased CTO

This is not spam. This is the REAL Timothy E. Bates.

I hope you are doing well. I’ve spent over 40 years in the tech game.

Mediocrity was never an option for me. Breaking molds and exceeding expectations is my code. By challenging outdated notions of what’s possible, my goal is to inspire others to dream bigger and do amazing things. It’s time to move “Beyond the Hype.”

The Genesis: Early Encounters with EVs (Electric Vehicles)

Contrary to popular belief, the EV1 was launched in the late '90s. This car was a game-changer;

In the ’80s, while most teenagers were jamming to hair bands and mastering the Rubik’s Cube, I worked as a Computer Operator 3 at Eaton Corporation. My job? Managing reel-to-reel tape backups for mainframes. Yeah, that’s some OG tech right there. But what’s more intriguing is that during this time, Eaton, HP, and a few other companies were already dipping their toes into electric vehicles (EVs). These early prototypes were regular cars retrofitted with batteries that had the lifespan of a mayfly.

The EV1 Era: A Leap Forward

Fast forward to 2003, I found myself at General Motors, where the EV1 was the talk of the town. Contrary to popular belief, the EV1 was launched in the late ’90s. This car was a game-changer; it was reliable, efficient, and did exactly what it was supposed to do. I drove it everywhere—from the Renaissance Center to Warren to Milford—without running out of juice. GM had about 8 or 9 beauties, but then, poof! They vanished.

GM pulled back the EV1s, and the reason remains a corporate enigma. However, if you ask me, it boils down to profitability. The tech was there, but the dollars weren’t. So, the EV1 became a relic of what could have been, gathering dust in some undisclosed location.

The Mystery: Why Did GM Pull the Plug?

The Tesla Revolution: Elon’s Tenacity

Enter Elon Musk and Tesla. Without Musk’s sheer audacity and relentless drive, we’d still be stuck in the fossil fuel rut. Tesla didn’t just resurrect the EV market; it threw down the gauntlet and challenged the entire automotive industry. And guess what? Everyone started scrambling to catch up.

Conclusion: The Road Ahead

EVs have been in the works for decades, but visionaries like Musk brought them to the mainstream. The technology has come a long way since my days of swapping reel-to-reel tapes and gawking at early EV prototypes. The future is electric, and it’s about time the world plugged in.
